Under sniper fire
To mis-speak : verb, intransitive;to tell lies but somehow to convey the impression that the lies were totally inadvertent, while offering confirmation that the lie-teller is a human being.

If an area is under sniper fire, does that mean that there are snipers operating in the area, or that there are sniper bullets flying towards you. If the former, is it okay to stroll about without a care in the world, or ought one to pick up one's pace and not stick around?
'Lie' has already been famously redefined to 'being wrong in hindsight' by those who are frothingly anti-BlairBush, so who can tell?
