In praise of the jury system

Perhaps it's plain contrariness. Or sympathy with the little guy standing up against the big battalions. Or maybe we are actually greener than we thought.

Whatever the reason, yesterday's verdict goes some way to restoring one's faith in the Great British public.

The Independent reports:
The threat of global warming is so great that campaigners were justified in causing more than £35,000 worth of damage to a coal-fired power station, a jury decided yesterday. In a verdict that will have shocked ministers and energy companies the jury at Maidstone Crown Court cleared six Greenpeace activists of criminal damage.

I can't help but think there will be a lot of unwashed hippies running amok in all sorts of places they shouldn't as a result of this ruling.

I think the jury are wrong, wrong, wrong! They need to be reminded that power station means the lights in their houses work when they flip the switch.

Green Team!

This is slightly worrying. But, so long as juries correctly identify acceptable vigilante-ism, I expect we'll be fine.
