They toil not, neither do they spin - and they are certainly not decorative

It may have been the holiday weekend, but Mr Swinney was not being idle. According to today's Executive press release:
At the weekend Mr Swinney met senior Executives at Standard Life, representatives of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and visited the Stirling-Alloa Kincardine railway project.
At Stirling Castle he had a day of meetings with key economic and public sector interests.
Furthermore, according to The Herald yesterday (here), the First Minister gave a briefing at Bute House to selected journalists.

But the Executive was officially on holiday so there were no press releases over the weekend. If I were Mr Salmond or Mr Swinney, I would be strongly tempted to put a bomb under the lazy sods in the Executive's press office.

Why is it that as soon as I read this, I closed my eyes and saw, in big bold letters, the words 'efficiency' and 'savings'?

Are civil servants not allowed to go on holiday?

You may not be aware that it was the Queen's Birthday holiday and a Bank Holiday this weekend, the former being a 'privilege' holiday we get to compensate for our piss-poor wages and the flak we take from ignorant bloggers such as yourself ;-)

Re: 'Anonymous' at 2.50pm

Methinks he/she doth protesteth too much. Also, with their index linked pensions on salaries which are certainly no worse for comparable grades than in the private sector, not to mention their security of employment, I think the whining nature of the comment is, frankly, laughable.

Bill, thanks for your comments! You may not be aware that the ';-)' icon signals a touch of irony... however, I believe you are going off the point somewhat with your anti-civil service rhetoric!

Yes, the civil service is a real bastion of stability with successive Governments threatening to trim us to bits and as for the pension, given I don't intend to retire for another 50 years I'm hardly down on my knees about that one! How about a decent wage so I can buy a home? Presumably you think it isn't a problem but perhaps you thought the recent strikes were over plastic spoons in the canteen? I am not saying the civil service is perfect (far from it) but people like me have joined to make the world a better place. Naive perhaps, but the constant bashing and stereotypes of civil servants dain f*ck all is a background whirr we could do without!

Far be it from me to criticise the Civil Service, but given that events don't necessarily take a holiday, not even at the end of May, and given that should an event take place information about what is happening might be needed, shouldn't there be at least some sort of cover over the weekend?

Speaking as someone with far too much time on his hands, the fact that the Executive did appear to be on a three-day hiatus isn't a sign of a modern 24/7 Government.

Basically, given modern life, if there isn't someone there at all times, is there a point there being someone there at all?
