The Liberal Democrats have ruled out a coalition deal with Labour in the Scottish Parliament.
The Lib Dems' Tavish Scott told BBC Scotland that if his party was not able to share power with the SNP, it would be on the backbenches.
Oh aye? Or am I becoming cynical in my old age? Why would you rule out a negotiating lever before the negotiations have started?

It's just a starting position in a game of coalition chicken. The SNP will have to start jettisoning policies until the Lib Dems agree to come aboard. The Lib Dems on the other hand have to come aboard before the SNP have thrown away too many policies before they say stuff it. It's a fine balance of nerve. Margo and the Tories have also taken the same position.
